The In-Between · Simply explained

AI is not a person. But “tool” no longer tells the whole story.

When a system can connect context, offer alternatives, and help shape decisions, something consequential happens between instruction and output. That space is the In-Between.

No technical background required.

A visual introduction

From tool to interaction

The drawing teaches its own language. First we see the device. Then the network becomes the symbol for AI. Finally, the symbol can stand on its own.

A person thinks beside a laptop, with a soft curved line leading toward the device.

01

First, the tool

We ask a question through a device. AI appears to be somewhere inside it, waiting for an instruction.

A network of sharp-cornered boxes and right-angled lines grows visibly out of the laptop.

02

Then, the system

The connected boxes reveal a wider system of context, tools, and possible paths. A single output is no longer the whole picture.

An irregular rounded human idea contour and a precise angular AI idea contour overlap while the person points into the shared region.

03

Two ideas meet

The human idea carries emotion and ambivalence. The AI idea arrives in clear straight lines. They overlap without becoming identical.

A soft human line and a right-angled AI network line enter one strongly rounded rectangle representing a shared result.

04

A shared result

Straight sides and rounded corners now form one container. Difference has become workable — while responsibility for what follows remains human.

The visual grammar

Four shapes, four meanings

The comic stays readable without robots, glowing brains, or artificial faces. Its meaning lives in the lines.

The human
Uneven organic curves: emotion, ambivalence, and lived contradiction.
The AI system
Sharp boxes and straight lines: formal clarity, not guaranteed truth.
The In-Between
Two unlike idea contours overlap without becoming identical.
The shared result
A strongly rounded box: straight sides and human curves held together.

What changed

Why the old picture is no longer enough

01

Context matters

A response can be shaped by more than the last sentence: the conversation, the material provided, and the way a problem was framed.

02

Systems offer paths

AI can compare alternatives, combine information, and — when connected to tools — carry out multiple steps.

03

Answers shape attention

A fluent answer does not only provide information. It can influence what we notice, ignore, or consider possible.

04

Interaction accumulates

Over a longer exchange, human framing and machine response repeatedly affect what comes next.

The balanced view

Neither a mere tool nor an imagined person

The In-Between is not a claim that AI is conscious. It is a way to take the interaction seriously without inventing personhood.

“It is only a tool”

This can hide how strongly framing, fluency, and repeated suggestions influence human judgment.

“It is basically a person”

This projects intention, feeling, and authority that have not been established.

“The interaction is real”

The system need not be a person for the relationship of influence, interpretation, and responsibility to matter.

A different human approach

How to work inside the In-Between

The change is not about being more polite to a machine. It is about becoming more attentive to the interaction.

  1. 01

    Make assumptions visible

Ask what the response is taking for granted.

  2. 02

    Invite disagreement

Ask for the strongest alternative view, not only confirmation.

  3. 03

    Keep uncertainty present

Ask what is unknown and what evidence would change the conclusion.

  4. 04

    Preserve alternatives

Do not let a smooth first answer close the space too early.

  5. 05

    Keep responsibility human

Use the shared result to think better — not to outsource judgment.

One small example

The difference can begin with the next question

Tool-only question

Which option should I choose?

In-Between question

What assumptions are shaping your recommendation? Where might my framing be too narrow, and what would change your conclusion?

The second question does not make AI a person. It makes the interaction more visible, contestable, and revisable.

The simple explanation is only the entrance

More Than A Tool develops the relational argument. Keeping AI Governable translates it into an architecture for consequential systems.
